The German Smear Look

German smear mimics the look of irregular stones and heavy mortar joints, a style often found on centuries-old cottages and castles throughout northern Germany. The technique is akin to whitewashing bricks, and creating a rustic and distressed appearance. It also gives the bricks partial coverage, which softens the harsh straight lines that exist in traditional brick siding and creates an irregular pattern. Although traditional German smear involves white mortar over red brick, we can meet your vision with various paint colors and tints. What’s more, German smear isn’t confined solely to home exteriors; some people update their interior brick walls and fireplaces using the technique.

Tissue papering technique

Tissue papering is a great way to achieve interesting textural effects on a wall. The tissue paper creates a wrinkled effect, and we paint over it to match the décor and design of a room. To achieve great results, we paint small sections of the wall and then apply each sheet of paper individually. The key to creating texture with tissue paper is to crumple the sheets before applying them to the wall.
